The Bhagavad Gita: A Conversation with the Divine
How I met Krishna
As many of you know, in 1999, at twenty-nine years old, I had just stepped into my Saturn Return and was hurled into the depths of a twin flame journey. I was being haunted by a person from my past. He appeared in my dreams, I could hear his voice in my head, and his energy often intimately merged with mine at night. Angels appeared in visions and dreams, telling me that we were on an extraordinary spiritual path together. Past-life memories surfaced, and I remembered that as a child, I had an imaginary friend I would fly through space with. I knew it was him. And that he was the one I had always been in love with. Later, he told me, I had known since I was 21, when we first met, but apparently trauma pushed this profound connection out of my consciousness until this moment of awakening.
However, I was married with two little, adorable kids. Lost, heartbroken, and drowning in confusion, I went to Barnes & Noble (before Google) looking for a book to help me understand what was happening to me. I perused the spiritual section looking for answers, but there was nothing that could explain this type of intense connection.
So, I wandered to the Eastern Philosophy section, when suddenly a book jumped off the shelf and landed at my feet. I picked it up and read the title: Jayadeva’s Gita Govinda – Love Song of the Dark Lord. I sat on the floor and read this epic poem about Radha and Krishna. Their story mirrored my own in inexplicable ways and I found myself sobbing. I knew these beings to the depths of my soul.
A few months later, I went across the country to see the man (who continued to haunt me) at one of his concerts. He was a well known musician (whom I knew) and I hoped he would have some answers for me as he often wrote songs that appeared in those dreams. I wore a Radha-Krishna shirt. When he came onstage, he was wearing the exact same shirt! This story goes on for eons, but that’s for another time . . .
Since then, Krishna (and Radha) have been profound guides for me. Nothing connects me to the divine like singing the Maha Mantra (Hare Krishna) in kirtan—it’s a transcendent experience unlike any other. Later, during my first yoga teacher training, I read the Bhagavad Gita, and it opened a whole new world of understanding.
Krishna guides Arjuna (and you)
If you’re not familiar, the Bhagavad Gita is one of the most important spiritual texts in the world. Reading it feels like stepping into a living conversation between the human soul and the divine. At its heart, it’s a dialogue between Arjuna, a warrior facing impossible choices, and Krishna, his charioteer, guide, and embodiment of divine consciousness.
If I am truly honest, when I first read it, I thought it was simple and wouldn’t teach me much, but that was the hubris of youth. With subsequent readings, I’ve found the teachings are timeless and the Gita is a practical guide of the right way of living through story. It addresses the universal human struggle: how do we act with integrity amidst confusing moral dilemmas, while also staying aligned with the deeper purpose of the soul.
Who is Krishna?
According to the Vedas, Krishna is the 8th Avatar of Vishnu, but also a supreme God in his own right. Krishna is the blue skinned God with the flute and Radha is his divine consort. He is the God of compassion, music, devotion, and love. Krishna represents the divine guide within each of us. He embodies wisdom, love, and infinite consciousness, and shows us how to connect with the divine in ordinary and challenging moments alike.
I find in Eknath Easwaran’s translation of the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna’s voice is clear and accessible and it invites us to explore principles of:
Dharma – righteous duty
Bhakti – devotion and love
Karma – selfless action
Through Krishna’s guidance, Arjuna learns that life isn’t about avoiding challenges, but about aligning the heart, mind, and action with truth. By surrendering attachment to outcomes, embracing dharma, and cultivating awareness of the eternal self, we can transform every aspect of life.
My Twin Flame Journey and Krishna’s Teachings
Reading the Bhagavad Gita in the context of my own twin flame journey brought profound clarity. What I love is, in the beginning, Arjuna does not want to do what he is called to do and struggles with what God has asked of him. In my journey, I wanted to be let off my path so often that I begged to be released, but it’s never that easy. Krishna’s teachings on dharma, devotion, and surrender mirrored the spiritual lessons I was learning through this crazy connection:
The importance of acting from truth and integrity, even when love or attachment complicates life.
The power of divine guidance and higher consciousness to navigate relationships that reflect the soul’s growth.
How union of masculine and feminine energies—inner and outer—creates alchemy that transforms heart, mind, and spirit.
Just as Krishna guided Arjuna through moral and spiritual challenges, I realized that my twin flame connection wasn’t just about romance or the happily-ever-after, white picket fence, it was a mirror of coming into soul alignment. It showed me where I needed to awaken, surrender, and embody divine truth in my own life. It was a gateway to Unity Consciousness.
And I am sure as you read), you’ll see how it fits into the context of your own life and dharma. If you want to share any insights here as you read or if you have any questions about Krishna or anything, feel free!
